Chapter 209: Chapter 202 – The Storm Arrives
“I’ve collected your stuff for you,” Zhan Qipei said, arriving beside Qiao Jing with a large box in his arms.
He was very curious about what was in the box, as the courier had told him earlier that the contents were worth over a hundred million. What on earth had Qiao Jing bought that was so valuable?
Moreover, he and Qiao Jing had been living together for four months now, and Qiao Jing rarely bought things online, let alone something so expensive.
“Oh, thank you.” Qiao Jing moved the package to her room without any expression and closed the door before she began to unpack it.
This behavior of Qiao Jing made Zhan Qipei even more puzzled. What could be in there that he couldn’t see?
Could it be–
Underwear and… undies?
What kind of underwear could be worth a hundred million? Made of gold and diamonds?
Although curious, it was Qiao Jing’s privacy, and it was not appropriate for him to ask.
“Ding dong–” Zhan Qipei knocked on the door, “I’m heading out, there’s no need to wait up for me or leave the light on; I’ll probably be back very late.”
“Okay, I got it.”
Just as Qiao Jing replied, she received a message from Wu Xirui.
“Did you receive the item?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you like it?”
Qiao Jing had just finished unpacking; it was a light pink evening gown, along with some jewelry, shoes, and handbags.
It looked expensive.
“How much was it?”
Wu Xirui immediately called her.
“I know you don’t like to casually accept things from others, so think of this as a loan from me; just return it to me after you wear it tonight,” Wu Xirui said.
With Wu Xirui saying this, it would seem too unkind of Qiao Jing to refuse again.
Although she always felt that Wu Xirui’s intentions for getting close to her weren’t simple, at least for the moment, he hadn’t done anything to hurt her.
She had always been of the mindset, “If no one offends me, I won’t offend anyone,” so there was no need to arbitrarily make enemies.
“Alright, I’ll return it to you after tonight.”
“Good, I’ll pick you up tonight.”
“I can take a taxi–” Qiao Jing hadn’t finished her sentence when Wu Xirui interrupted her.
“There might be a thunderstorm tonight, and with you dressed in something so valuable, it wouldn’t be good if it got rained on.”
Hearing this, Qiao Jing checked the weather on her phone.
Indeed, there was rain forecasted for tonight, and it looked to be heavy.
Getting wet herself wasn’t a big deal, but the dress and accessories weren’t hers; getting them damaged by the rain would be her responsibility.
“Then, if it’s not too much trouble for you, you can come over.”
Around six-thirty that evening, Wu Xirui personally drove over.
“I’ve arrived,” Wu Xirui called Qiao Jing.
“I see you, I’m coming down,” Qiao Jing had been standing on the balcony just now and had seen Wu Xirui’s car arrive.
Three minutes later, Wu Xirui looked at her, dressed in the evening gown he had specially prepared for her, his eyes revealing an immensely astonished look.
“I knew it, that evening gown suits you so well.”
Wu Xirui made a move to grab Qiao Jing’s hand, ready to touch the back of her hand.
But Qiao Jing didn’t give Wu Xirui the opportunity. As he reached out, she walked right past him, opened the car door, and sat down.
A helpless yet interested smile appeared on Wu Xirui’s face. He wasn’t the least bit angry at Qiao Jing’s behavior; on the contrary, he was excited.
Soon, the car arrived at the hotel where the banquet was being held.
After getting out of the car, Wu Xirui extended his hand toward Qiao Jing, meaning for her to take his arm.
Qiao Jing’s brows knitted slightly; clearly, she was reluctant.
“Give me some face, will you? Look, isn’t every lady here holding onto someone like this? There’s no other meaning, it’s just a simple courtesy,” Wu Xirui said, stretching his arm towards Qiao Jing again.
Although Qiao Jing was still unwilling in her heart, she understood–it was just simple courtesy.
In the end, Qiao Jing extended her hand and took Wu Xirui’s arm, accompanying him as they walked inside.
In the banquet hall, Zhan Qipei was drinking red wine alone.
“Eh? Young Master Zhan, why didn’t you bring Qiao Jing with you? In the past, didn’t you always keep her close at your side? It’s very unusual today! Tell me honestly, did you two have a fight?” Lu Zijiao asked with confusion.
Zhan Qipei put down his glass and glanced at Lu Zijiao, “Are you saying that as soon as Qiao Jing and I have a fight, your brother should swoop in immediately to take advantage?”
“Young Master Zhan, with that remark, you’re treating me like a stranger, and that doesn’t sit well with me,” Zijiao replied.
“Oh?” Zhan Qipei raised an eyebrow, “Are you suggesting that when compared with your brother, he’s the outsider, not me?”
That question from Zhan Qipei made Zijiao feel uneasy.
“Ah–this is between you and my brother; I’d rather not get involved.”
The truth wasn’t that Lu Zijiao didn’t want to get involved, but that his brother was a closed book, a block of wood, who simply wouldn’t see sense no matter what was said. Even if he tried to push from the sidelines, it was useless.
Since that was the case, he decided to do nothing. Let Zhan Qipei do as he pleased, and his brother as well; it was all up to their own abilities.
“You haven’t answered my question from before. Why didn’t you bring Qiao Jing with you? Could it really be like I guessed, that the two of you had a fight?”
“She had a patient to see; she said she didn’t have the time,” Zhan Qipei replied lightly, swirling his wine glass.
“Oh. I see–” Lu Zijiao picked up his glass, tilted his head back to take a sip, and suddenly spat it out.
“What are you doing?” Zhan Qipei frowned, as the wine Zijiao had spit out had splashed onto him.
“Cough cough cough–no, it’s not–Young Master Zhan, look, cough cough cough–take a look, what–is going on?!” Zijiao said, eyes wide, pointing toward the doorway.
Confused, Zhan Qipei followed the direction of Zijiao’s pointing and saw, at a glance, Qiao Jing walking into the hotel’s entrance arm in arm with Wu Xirui. His face instantly darkened.
“Cough cough cough–” Zijiao patted his chest, not caring that the choking was severe, and continued, “Young Master Zhan, what’s going on? Didn’t you say she was seeing a patient? Why is she here with another man? And that man is–he’s him!”
Zhan Qipei put down his wine glass and stood up, his entire demeanor radiating a keep-away chill, striding over to Qiao Jing with a disregard for all else.
“Tsk tsk tsk–” Lu Zijiao clicked his tongue, “Here comes the storm.”
“Rumble rumble rumble–” Thunder rolled and lightning flashed outside.
Zijiao looked out the window and said, “This is really–quite apt for the occasion!”
The thunder had drawn Qiao Jing’s attention for a moment, but when she looked back, she caught a glimpse of Zhan Qipei striding toward her in her peripheral vision.

Why was he here as well?
Come to think of it, he had mentioned he was attending a business banquet today. It was just unexpected that it would be this one.
“You–”
Before Qiao Jing could finish speaking, Zhan Qipei grabbed her wrist and yanked her toward him.
Her feet, clad in stiletto heels, made her balance precarious when Zhan Qipei suddenly pulled her, causing her to stumble uncontrollably forward and fall toward the man’s chest.
